Flip Flop
Flip Flop addresses ideologies, materials, process, and physicality. In the past, my focus has been on refining signature design and control of the ceramic process and outcome. Returning to my sculptural background, I have experimented with combining alternate materials and clay using nontraditional ceramic techniques and an intuitive sense play. For these sculptures, I saturated recycled paper material in clay slip and then draped and poured over forms. I both construct the forms and fire upside down, only when they are glazed and pulled out of the kiln are they turned to reveal a vessel form. I am subverting my own practice to free myself of the constraints and expectations of the traditional ceramic process.
This series is an exploration of what is known and expected in my own ceramic practice. Through play and experimentation with materials, I am subverting my own expectations of outcome and control. Only when the work is flipped to become a vessel again are the ideologies transformed. The letting go of intention and outcome allows for the form to claim its own space and inherent identity.
